MSC Cruises pioneered original entertainment and content dedicated to the young audience for web, social media and on-board and following the success of two original web series, “Kelly & Kloe on board ” and “Cabin 12006”, MSC Cruises is now introducing an original teen music video for the first time – dedicated to its private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

“Ocean Cay: A cabin 12006 story” will be available on YouTube starting 6 November 2023.

The video stars social media superstar Merrick Hanna, who has 47 million total followers on social media, along with American supporting talents Sophie Santella and Ralphy Perdomo and Italian web star Sespo.

Matteo Mancini, Senior Manager Youth Entertainment MSC Cruises: The ever-increasing number of young guests and teenagers on board our ships naturally lead us to follow the trends they love most. MSC Cruises offers them an unforgettable 360-degree holiday that starts at home with our original entertainment content on the web and social mediacontinues on board with our activities organised by our Young & Teens Club and carries on after the cruise, thanks to the teens themselves who become our digital creators and ambassadors.”

Mancini continued, “When people ask us why MSC Cruises has become internationally awarded as “Best Cruise Line for Families” over the years, the answer is simple: we listen to our young guests and build their loyalty. MSC Cruises’ original entertainment content, produced by our youth division, exceeded 11.9 million web hits, 64 million impressions and over 4 million interactions between young guests and teenagers via the official hashtags #mscteens #cabin12006.”

Produced by MSC Cruises in partnership with Jumpcut Media and directed by Alessandro Valbonesi, the exciting new music video chronicles a cruise holiday to Ocean Cay, featuring a group of young guests divided by their different interests between VR, sports, hip hop dancing and unrequited love. The beautiful island of Ocean Cay in the Bahamas will unite them, reminding them how wonderful life is, especially on holiday.

The environmentally advanced MSC EURIBIA completes successful sea trials

MSC Euribia
MSC Euribia

  • MSC Cruises’ second LNG-powered ship enters final phase of preparation for inaugural season in Northern Europe
  • Striking new hull design by German graphic artist Alex Flämig is now complete and ready to be revealed

Geneva, Switzerland and Saint-Nazaire, France – 24 April 2023 – MSC Cruises’ second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship MSC Euribia has successfully completed her deep-water intensive systems tests during a four-day trial in the Atlantic Ocean. MSC Cruises’ latest flagship will next receive her finishing touches at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France before being officially delivered to MSC Cruises on 31 May.

MSC Euribia will be MSC Cruises’ 22 ship to join its fleet and be able to accommodate up to 6,327 passengers.  The ship will be officially named on 8 June in Copenhagen, Denmark before sailing a maiden inaugural season in Northern Europe from her homeport in Kiel, Germany.

MSC Euribia will feature innovative and advanced marine technology, as well as LNG fuel – one of the world’s cleanest marine fuels available at scale – to minimise her environmental footprint. She will also strike a new silhouette with an exclusive customised fresco painted on her exterior that celebrates MSC Cruises’ commitment to protect and preserve the marine environment.

STRIKING HULL ARTWORK COMPLETED

Designed by German graphic artist Alex Flämig following an international competition, the recently completed hull artwork aims to stimulate discussion on the importance of protecting the delicate and complex ecosystem of the oceans.

Hull design winner Alex Flämig commented, “To witness my design finally come to life across MSC Euribia’s hull is an incredibly proud moment and even more so, to soon have my artwork sailing the world’s oceans. I hope it can serve not only as a testament to MSC Cruises’ commitment to protecting the important marine ecosystem, but also as an inspiration for those working on finding innovative solutions to safeguard the future of the ocean.”

MSC Euribia is named after the ancient goddess Eurybia, who harnessed the winds, weather, and constellations to master the seas, illustrating the vision of the ship to deploy advanced sustainable solutions do the same. Designed with an ocean-inspired colour palette, Flämig’s visual masterpiece entitled “#SavetheSea” is a representation of MSC Cruises’ ongoing dedication to the sea and commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

THE ENVIRONMENTALLY ADVANCED MSC EURIBIA

LNG is one of the world’s cleanest marine fuels available at scale and is set to play a key role in the transition to the decarbonisation of international shipping. It substantially reduces local air pollutant emissions like sulphur oxides by up to 99 per cent and nitrogen oxides by up to 85 per cent.  LNG also plays a key role in climate change mitigation as it offers up to a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and is paving the way for the uptake of sustainable non-fossil fuels such as bio- and synthetic LNG.

As bio and synthetic fuels become available, MSC Euribia’s emissions will be further reduced. LNG is key to the development of low carbon solutions for shipping as emerging technologies such as fuel cells can be operated with LNG until zero emissions bio-LNG or green hydrogen become available at scale. MSC Cruises is actively involved in several projects to develop and make these technologies viable in partnership with regulators, academia, shipyards and industry.

The ship will also feature shore power plug-in connectivity to reduce carbon emissions in port, the most advanced wastewater treatment systems designed in line with the United Nations’ shipping body the International Maritime Organization, comprehensive waste recycling, underwater radiated noise management system to help limit disturbance to marine life and a comprehensive range of onboard energy efficient equipment to optimise engine use and hotel energy needs to further reduce emissions.

MSC Euribia will begin to set sail for her inaugural season in Northern Europe in June, offering 7-night sailings from Kiel, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark to the captivating Norwegian Fjords including Geiranger, Ålesund, and Flaam.

MSC World Europa, the world’s most environmentally high-performing cruise ship, starts sailing in the Mediterranean

MSC World Europa
MSC World Europa

MSC Cruises’ innovative new ship – MSC World Europa – has arrived in Europe to commence her first summer season in the Mediterranean. Delivered in October 2022 by French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique, MSC World Europa is MSC Cruises’ largest vessel and the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). MSC World Europa is the best performing large cruise ship operating in the world in terms of CO2eq emissions per passenger.

An MSC spokesperson said: “It is with great pride that we welcome MSC World Europa in Europe as she starts her first summer season in the Mediterranean. This groundbreaking vessel is a testimony of our unwavering commitment to sustainable cruising, with a range of unprecedented innovations in terms of environmental and marine technologies. MSC World Europa represents a major step forward on our journey towards meeting our target of net-zero emissions by 2050.”

The ship will be powered by LNG throughout the summer season, with her first bunkering in Marseille scheduled on 15 April 2023. LNG is the cleanest marine fuel currently available at scale. Compared to standard marine fuels, LNG virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions – including sulphur oxides and fine particles – and reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 85 per cent.

LNG also plays a key role in climate change mitigation as it offers up to a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and is paving the way for the uptake of sustainable non-fossil fuels such as bio- and synthetic LNG.

Unique fuel cell technology showing promising results

MSC World Europa is the world’s first contemporary cruise ship to feature brand new solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology powered by LNG. The ship includes a 150-kilowatt SOFC demonstrator that uses LNG to produce electricity and heat on board in a highly efficient way by means of an electrochemical reaction.

This could be a key to unlocking significant environmental sustainability gains in the future. Thanks to this increased efficiency, SOFC has the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases substantially compared with a conventional LNG engine without producing emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides or fine particles.  One great advantage is that not only is the cell compatible with LNG, but also with possible new sources of low carbon fuels such as green methanol, ammonia, liquid hydrogen and bio or synthetic LNG.

Linden Coppell, Vice President of Sustainability & ESG at MSC Cruises, said: “Nearly six months into testing, the fuel cell performance has been excellent, and we haven’t seen any signs of safety or maintenance issues. The efficiency to date – measured in terms of the energy we can generate from the same unit of fuel – is well above that of an internal combustion engine and has exceeded our expectations. We have operated the system continually and it has delivered a steady output even better than our forecast 150-kilowatt return. Obviously, this is a small fraction of the energy we need but we are confident that the system can be scaled up on future newbuilds. We recognise that this will requires close collaboration with partners across and outside of our industry, which is why MSC Cruises is actively involved in several different research initiatives and partnerships that all share the common objective of accelerating the transition toward a net-zero future.

A range of other environmental features

MSC World Europa is equipped with shore power plug-in connectivity to reduce carbon emissions in port, as well as with an advanced wastewater treatment system (AWTS) that meets the world’s highest regulatory requirements, including the so-called Baltic standard. It treats all wastewater produced onboard to close to tap water standards. The ship also includes a ballast water treatment system that prevents the introduction of invasive species in the marine environment through ballast water discharges, in full compliance with IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention.

The vessel has an entire team of crew dedicated to implementing the strict waste management protocols which separate all wastes into seven distinct types, for example, glass, aluminum and paper, with specialised equipment to crush or bundle these waste types in the ship’s waste management facility.

In addition, MSC World Europa features underwater radiated noise management system to minimise disturbance to marine life and a comprehensive range of onboard energy efficient equipment to optimise engine use and hotel energy needs to reduce emissions further. It is also fitted with enhanced automatic data collection systems for remote energy monitoring and advanced analysis, allowing real-time shoreside support to optimise operational efficiency onboard.

Next-generation cruise experience

During this first summer season the Mediterranean, guests on board MSC World Europa will be able to experience the trailblazing ship’s extraordinary features and impressive spaces, including the spectacular World Promenade, immersive culinary experiences, next-level entertainment options and the largest, most action-packed kids’ area in MSC Cruises’ fleet.

About MSC World Europa’s Key Features:

THE SPECTACULAR WORLD PROMENADE

The nearly 104-metre-long outdoor World Promenade is one of the ship’s most impressive spaces. Day or night, this is the place to be for entertainment, stunning sea views and The Venom Drop @ The Spiral, a striking architectural masterpiece and the longest dry slide at sea with its 11-deck drop. The World Promenade is connected to the World Galleria, which spans 2,214m and is crowned by an awe-inspiring LED and kinetic dome ceiling. The World Promenade is the perfect place to shop, dine and relax with a drink.

MSC World Europa will take guests on a gastronomic journey around the world with a choice of 20 bars and lounges, and 13 dining venues — each with its own distinct style and ambiance. This includes six specialty restaurants and seven brand new bar and café concepts.

Chef’s Garden Kitchen is a first-of-its-kind collaboration for MSC Cruises with Michelin-starred chef, TV personality and author Niklas Ekstedt focusing on natural ingredients and a farm-to-ocean ethos. This new restaurant features the first-at-sea hydroponic garden where guests will be treated to a uniquely immersive experience, with the master chef preparing Ekstedt’s extraordinary creations in an open kitchen against a backdrop of panoramic sea views.
